Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as he has contributed significantly in maintaining the 45 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. With the introduction of Belt and Road Initiative, both countries can further enhance their cooperation, making a mark in history.
He hoped that both countries can continue their friendly relation and trust each other and to provide support in any relevant form when the respective country needs it. The Belt and Road Initiative is expected to boost Malaysia’s economic development and bring in more investment opportunities to the neighbouring countries. To ensure the initiative will be successful in making Malaysia into a new trade route, both countries need to put in considerable effort to build up the platform and encourage quality cooperation.
President Xi believes that Asia can be a force to reckon with, but it requires all developing countries, particular the ASEAN countries to work and move forward together. China will also fully support Malaysia in becoming the next host nation for Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) for the year 2020.
Prime Minister Mahathir said that since its founding 70 years ago, China was able to improve the nation’s economy and significantly reduce poverty within the country, allowing 1.4 billion population within the country to live a happier and high quality life. This is a remarkable achievement in itself. He states that the main purpose of his trip to China is to determine what are the main factors driving the successful development and learn from them.
The Belt and Road Initiative has huge potential as it will not only help deal with the infrastructure and transportation issues that are impeding the development of different countries, but also address the problem of unbalanced development, promote cultural exchange, and help eradicate the root causes of war, extremism and terrorism. It is an initiative that provides huge benefits, especially to developing countries including Malaysia.
Despite both countries having established a friendly relationship for a long time, Malaysia still highly values China’s cooperation. The launch of Belt and Road Initiative is set to herald in new chapter for the China-Malaysia relation and accelerate the economic and infrastructure development of Malaysia.
